Our History

The Statesville Historical Collection began with Steve Hill’s passion for history as a teenager, collecting pieces of the past that would one day become a remarkable showcase of the city’s heritage, growing over decades into the treasured resource it is today.

History of the Collection

The Statesville Historical Collection began in the late 1960's when Steve Hill, a passionate advocate for local history, began collecting artifacts that captured the essence of Statesville and its people. His journey started with a few treasured items, but it quickly grew into a much larger undertaking. What began as a hobby in Hill's home evolved into a mission to preserve and share the town's rich past.

Over the decades, Hill’s dedication to expanding the collection took shape in multiple locations, each marking a milestone in the SHC’s evolution. The first public display of the collection occurred in 2013 when it was housed in a balloon factory warehouse. Though the space was temporary, it provided the public a glimpse into Statesville’s history, and the community’s enthusiasm further fueled Hill’s commitment to ensuring that this local history would be preserved for generations to come. By 2015, the collection had outgrown its warehouse setting and moved to the historic Gordon Building. This relocation allowed for even more artifacts to be displayed, attracting more visitors and encouraging even deeper community engagement.

But Hill’s vision did not end there. Determined to create a lasting legacy for future generations, Hill set his sights on securing a permanent home for the collection. In 2024, after years of effort, Hill’s dream was realized when the Statesville Historical Collection moved into its new space at 117 South Center Street. This newly renovated building offered ample space to showcase a more expansive collection, giving visitors a broader, more immersive experience of the area’s history. This move was spearheaded and made possible by Jimmy Wilson. Jimmy's vision is the reason that the collection will be available for future generations. Jimmy and his wife Vicky provided the seed money for the Historical Collection. Additionally, the entire Wilson family has been involved with the process. Another person who made the move possible is Stamey Holland. Stamey provided the space necessary for the collection in the Holland Building at 117 South Center Street. With its new home, the SHC is not just a collection of artifacts, but a dynamic space for education, reflection, and engagement with the community’s roots.
